One of the most common questions we receive from NZeTA applicants is: "How quickly will I get my approval?" The answer depends largely on which processing option you choose. This guide explains the three tiers — Standard, Express, and Emergency — and helps you decide which is right for your travel situation.
Understanding the Three NZeTA Processing Tiers
Standard Processing (48–72 Hours)
Standard processing is the most economical option and is suitable for the majority of travellers who are applying well ahead of their departure date. Most straightforward applications from eligible countries are processed automatically and approved within 48–72 hours. This window accounts for high-volume periods where there may be a slight queue.
Best for: Travellers applying 5 or more days before departure with no complicating factors in their application.
Express Processing (12–24 Hours)
Express processing prioritises your application ahead of the standard queue and delivers a decision within 12 to 24 hours. This is a popular option for travellers who have left the application a little late or want extra peace of mind as their departure date approaches.
Best for: Travellers departing within 2–4 days who want faster confirmation without the urgency of emergency processing.
Emergency Processing (Same Day / Next Day)
Emergency processing is designed for applicants who need their NZeTA urgently — typically those travelling within 24 hours or on the same day. This is the highest-priority tier and carries a premium fee. Applications submitted under emergency processing are handled as a top priority.
Best for: Travellers with same-day or next-day flights who realised they need an NZeTA at the last minute.
When Should You Choose Each Option?
Choosing the right processing tier comes down to how much time you have before your departure:
- More than 5 days before travel: Standard processing is almost always sufficient. Apply early and save on processing fees.
- 2–5 days before travel: Express processing provides added security. You will receive your approval well within the window needed for check-in verification.
- Less than 48 hours before travel: Emergency processing is the recommended choice. Do not risk a standard or express application at this point — the stated 48-hour window may coincide with your departure.
Processing times are not guaranteed. While the vast majority of applications are handled within the stated windows, factors such as application volume, public holidays, or additional review requirements can extend processing. Always allow extra time where possible, and never book flights without first planning your NZeTA application timeline.
What Factors Affect NZeTA Processing Time?
Even with Express or Emergency processing, certain factors can cause your application to take longer than the standard window:
- Health declarations: If you answer "yes" to any of the health questions on the application form, your submission may require manual review by an immigration officer.
- Character declarations: A criminal record, previous deportation, or other character concerns will typically trigger a manual review process that cannot be expedited by processing tier alone.
- Name matches against watchlists: Automated systems sometimes flag common names or similar details against immigration databases. These are usually resolved quickly but can add time.
- Peak application periods: Around school holidays, public holidays, and the New Zealand summer (December–February) see higher application volumes.
- Incomplete or inaccurate applications: Errors in passport numbers or dates of birth can cause rejection rather than delay, requiring a new application.
Tips If You Are Travelling Soon
If your travel date is approaching and you have not yet applied for your NZeTA, follow these steps:
- Apply immediately — don't delay by an hour. The clock on processing begins from the moment you submit.
- Select Emergency processing if you are travelling within 24–48 hours.
- Ensure all passport details are entered exactly as they appear — no errors that would force a re-submission.
- Use a monitored email address that you check regularly — your approval will arrive via email.
- Contact your airline if you are worried about check-in — they can sometimes note a pending application, though this is at their discretion.

Can You Switch Processing Tiers After Applying?
No — once you have submitted and paid for your NZeTA at a given processing tier, the application is entered into the queue at that level. You cannot upgrade from Standard to Express or Emergency after submission. If you need faster processing and have already submitted a Standard application, you would need to submit a new application at the higher tier.
