What is the New Zealand Business ETA?

The New Zealand Business ETA (NZeTA) is a mandatory pre-travel authorisation for citizens of visa-waiver countries who intend to travel to New Zealand for short-term business purposes — including meetings, conferences, seminars, trade negotiations, and corporate events. It was introduced alongside the Tourist NZeTA in October 2019 and replaced the previous visa-free entry arrangement for business travellers.

The Business NZeTA is ideally suited for executives, consultants, sales professionals, and corporate representatives who need to visit New Zealand clients, attend industry events, or participate in negotiations without intending to take up employment within New Zealand.

The authorisation is linked electronically to your passport, valid for 2 years from the date of approval, and permits multiple entries — giving frequent business travellers the flexibility to make repeat visits to New Zealand without reapplying each time.

Same Form as Tourist NZeTA: The Business and Tourist NZeTAs are processed through the same online application — you simply select "Business" as your travel purpose. Both carry identical fees, validity periods, and processing times.

Business NZeTA — Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most important questions about the New Zealand Business ETA.

Both are applied for through the same online form and carry identical validity (2 years), multiple-entry permissions, fees, and processing times. The only difference is the declared travel purpose: you select "Business" for professional visits (meetings, conferences) or "Tourism" for leisure. Declaring the correct purpose is important as border officials may ask about your plans.

No. The Business NZeTA does not permit paid employment in New Zealand. You may attend meetings, conferences, and negotiations, and continue to receive salary payments from your overseas employer — but you cannot be employed by or contract directly for a New Zealand company. A New Zealand work visa is required for any form of employment.

No supporting documents are required for the NZeTA application itself. However, New Zealand border officials may ask for evidence of your business purpose upon arrival — such as a meeting invitation letter, conference registration, or business correspondence. It is advisable to carry these documents in case.

Most nationalities may stay up to 90 days per visit. UK citizens benefit from a bilateral arrangement allowing up to 6 months (180 days) per visit — including for business purposes. The NZeTA is valid for 2 years, covering multiple business trips within that period.

Yes. The NZeTA application fee is a travel expense that most employers will treat as a standard business travel cost. Keep the payment confirmation email as your receipt for expense claims. The IVL levy component is also included in the total fee paid at application.

Yes. The NZeTA is required for any entry into New Zealand, including day trips and one-day business visits. If you are only transiting through Auckland Airport without entering New Zealand, you need a Transit NZeTA instead. If you are entering New Zealand — even briefly — a standard NZeTA (Tourist or Business) is required.
