Visiting New Zealand from Hong Kong — Your NZeTA & Travel Guide

Hong Kong is part of New Zealand's visa-waiver programme. You must hold a Hong Kong SAR passport or a British National (Overseas) BN(O) passport — a HKSAR identity card alone is not sufficient for NZeTA eligibility.

Passport Requirement for Hong Kong Residents — Please Read Carefully

To be eligible for the NZeTA, Hong Kong residents must travel on either a Hong Kong SAR passport or a British National (Overseas) BN(O) passport. A Hong Kong SAR permanent identity card (HKID) alone is not sufficient and cannot be used to apply for or qualify for an NZeTA. Your NZeTA must be applied for and linked to one of the accepted passport types above.

What Hong Kong Visitors Love About New Zealand

Hong Kong and New Zealand have long enjoyed close ties, with a significant Hong Kong-born community residing in New Zealand and strong ongoing connections between the two places. For Hong Kong residents, New Zealand offers a complete contrast to the city's density and pace — vast open spaces, crystal-clear air, untouched national parks, and a relaxed way of life that is deeply restorative. Yet New Zealand's cities also offer the kind of sophisticated dining, cosmopolitan culture, and efficient infrastructure that Hong Kong travellers expect.

Cathay Pacific operates direct flights between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Auckland (AKL), with a flight time of approximately 10 hours. This direct connection — one of the most popular long-haul routes in the Asia-Pacific region — makes New Zealand highly accessible for Hong Kong travellers. The direct flight is a significant advantage, eliminating the need for stopovers and minimising total journey time to and from one of the world's most beautiful destinations.

Your NZeTA — What Hong Kong Residents Need to Know

The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) is mandatory for Hong Kong residents travelling to or transiting through New Zealand. It is a digital travel authorisation electronically linked to your passport — not a physical document. New Zealand's border system verifies your NZeTA automatically when you check in for your Cathay Pacific or other flight from Hong Kong.

Critical Passport Requirement

You must hold either a Hong Kong SAR passport (issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department) or a British National (Overseas) BN(O) passport (issued by the UK) to be eligible for the NZeTA.

A Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card (HKID) alone is not accepted and cannot be used for NZeTA eligibility. Your NZeTA application must be linked to one of the two qualifying passport types.

Requirements for Hong Kong Residents:

  • Hong Kong SAR passport OR British National (Overseas) BN(O) passport — HKID alone is not sufficient
  • Passport must be valid at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from New Zealand
  • Working email address to receive your NZeTA approval notification
  • Credit or debit card for the NZeTA application fee including the IVL conservation levy
  • Honest completion of the health and character declaration questions
  • Return or onward travel documentation for check-in

Common Questions from Hong Kong Travellers

Yes. Hong Kong residents who hold a Hong Kong SAR passport or a British National (Overseas) BN(O) passport are eligible for the NZeTA and must apply before travelling. The NZeTA is a mandatory pre-travel requirement — it is not issued on arrival. A HKSAR permanent identity card alone does not qualify you for the NZeTA and cannot be used instead of a passport.

You must use either your Hong Kong SAR passport (the dark red booklet issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department) or your British National (Overseas) BN(O) passport (issued by the UK government). These are the only two passport types that qualify Hong Kong residents for the NZeTA visa-waiver. You cannot apply using a People's Republic of China (PRC) passport under the same NZeTA waiver — PRC passport holders require a separate visitor visa application through Immigration New Zealand.

Hong Kong residents holding an HKSAR or BN(O) passport may stay in New Zealand for up to 90 days per visit under the NZeTA. The NZeTA is valid for 2 years and permits multiple entries. If you hold a BN(O) passport and are eligible as a British National, note that this 90-day allowance applies — unlike UK citizens holding a full British passport who benefit from a 6-month stay entitlement under a separate bilateral arrangement.

The NZeTA is valid for New Zealand only. Hong Kong passport holders (HKSAR) wishing to visit Australia need to apply separately for an Australian ETA through the Australian government. Combining New Zealand and Australia in one itinerary is very popular with Hong Kong travellers — both countries are well served by direct flights from Hong Kong, and the trans-Tasman flight between Auckland and Sydney or Melbourne takes approximately 3–4 hours.
