Malaysia is part of New Zealand's visa-waiver programme. With AirAsia X flying direct from Kuala Lumpur to Auckland, New Zealand has never been more accessible to Malaysian travellers.
Malaysia and New Zealand enjoy strong bilateral ties, with thousands of Malaysian students and professionals based in New Zealand and a well-established community of Malaysian-New Zealanders. For Malaysian visitors, New Zealand offers a deeply familiar sense of warmth and multicultural energy in its cities — Auckland's vibrant Asian community, Halal-friendly dining scene, and Malaysian restaurant culture make it feel genuinely welcoming. Beyond the cities, New Zealand's natural landscapes — from the geothermal wonders of Rotorua to the snow-capped peaks of the South Island — provide an extraordinary contrast to Malaysia's tropical environment.
AirAsia X operates a direct service between Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) and Auckland (AKL), with a flight time of approximately 10 hours. This direct connection makes Malaysia one of Southeast Asia's most conveniently connected countries to New Zealand, and has contributed to a significant increase in Malaysian tourist numbers in recent years. Malaysia Airlines also operates services to Auckland via various routing options. Malaysian passport holders are among the Asia-Pacific eligible nationals for New Zealand's NZeTA programme.
Malaysian citizens need an NZeTA before travelling to New Zealand. Apply online — takes under 10 minutes.
The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) is a mandatory pre-travel requirement for all Malaysian passport holders visiting or transiting through New Zealand. It is a digital authorisation electronically linked to your Malaysian passport — there is no physical document. New Zealand's border system verifies the NZeTA automatically when you check in for your AirAsia X or other flight from Kuala Lumpur.
The application is completed fully online in approximately 5–10 minutes. Your NZeTA is valid for two years from the date of issue or until your Malaysian passport expires (whichever is sooner), and permits multiple entries to New Zealand for stays of up to 90 days each. Apply at least 72 hours before your departure — most applications are approved within 24–72 hours.
Enter personal details, Malaysian passport information, and travel purpose. Takes 5–10 minutes on any device.
Provide your Malaysian passport number, issue and expiry dates. No physical document upload needed.
Pay securely by credit or debit card. Includes the NZeTA processing charge and the IVL conservation levy.
Most applicants receive NZeTA approval within 24–72 hours. Keep your confirmation email for check-in at KLIA.
Malaysian travellers love New Zealand's clean air, stunning natural scenery, and welcoming multicultural cities — here are the must-visit highlights.

A world away from Malaysia's tropical flatlands, Queenstown's mountain scenery and adventure tourism make it irresistible. Ski the Remarkables, try bungee jumping, or simply take the Skyline gondola for panoramic views over Lake Wakatipu and the mountains.
Rotorua's geothermal activity — erupting geysers, boiling mud pools, and natural hot springs — is unlike anything in Southeast Asia. Traditional Māori cultural performances and authentic hāngi dinners round out a truly unique New Zealand experience.
Fiordland's Milford Sound is a defining New Zealand experience. The towering fjord walls, permanent waterfalls, and pristine waters teeming with dolphins and seals make every cruise a journey into one of the most beautiful places on the planet.
