One of the most common questions travellers have about the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority is: "Can I renew my NZeTA?" The short answer is no — there is no renewal process. When your NZeTA expires, or when circumstances change, you must submit a completely fresh application. Understanding when this is required and how to do it quickly is the purpose of this guide.
The NZeTA Cannot Be Renewed
Unlike some travel documents, the New Zealand ETA does not offer a renewal pathway. You cannot extend an existing NZeTA, top it up, or modify it once issued. If your NZeTA is no longer valid — for any reason — you are required to apply for a brand new one through the standard online application process.
This might feel inconvenient, but the process is genuinely quick. Most travellers complete a fresh NZeTA application in under 10 minutes, and Standard processing returns an approval within 48–72 hours. If you have upcoming travel and your ETA has just expired, Express or Emergency processing options are also available.
When Does an NZeTA Expire?
A standard NZeTA is valid for two years from the date it is issued — or until the expiry date of the passport it is linked to, whichever comes first. This means:
- If your NZeTA was issued in June and your passport expires in August of the same year, your NZeTA effectively expires in August.
- If your passport has many years of validity remaining, your NZeTA will be valid for the full two years.
- Each approved NZeTA is tied to a specific passport number. It cannot be transferred.
Within the two-year validity window, you may visit New Zealand multiple times — staying up to 90 days per visit (or up to 6 months for UK passport holders). When the two years are up, you reapply.
If you have a trip to New Zealand approaching and your NZeTA is about to expire, apply for a new one at least two weeks in advance. Standard processing takes up to 72 hours, but building in a buffer ensures you have confirmation well before you travel. See our processing times and fees page for full details on turnaround options.
New Passport? You Need a New NZeTA
Because the NZeTA is electronically linked to your passport number, renewing or replacing your passport automatically invalidates your existing ETA. It does not matter whether your old NZeTA was still within its two-year window — it will not be recognised when you travel on your new passport.
This is one of the most frequently missed requirements. Travellers who have a valid NZeTA but then renew their passports before a trip often arrive at check-in only to be told their ETA is no longer valid. Avoid this by applying for a new NZeTA immediately after you receive your new passport, before booking any flights.
What If You Have Lost Your Passport?
If your passport is lost or stolen and you receive a replacement, the same rule applies. Your new passport has a different number, so your NZeTA is no longer valid. You will need to apply again using the details from your replacement passport before you travel to New Zealand.
Name Change or Other Personal Details
If you have had a legal name change — such as following marriage or divorce — and your passport has been reissued in your new name, your existing NZeTA is no longer valid because it is linked to the old passport. Apply for a new NZeTA using your updated passport details.
Note that minor discrepancies (such as a middle name appearing on one document but not another) can sometimes cause issues at immigration. It is always best to ensure the name on your NZeTA application matches your passport exactly, character for character.
How to Reapply for NZeTA Quickly
Reapplying for an NZeTA is exactly the same process as applying for the first time. There is no shortened route or returning-traveller shortcut. Here is what to have ready:
- Your current valid passport (the one you will travel on)
- Your passport number, nationality, date of birth, and expiry date
- A working email address for your approval notification
- Payment card for the application fee
- Answers to the standard health and character declaration questions
Head to the application form, complete all sections carefully, and choose the processing speed that suits your timeline. For full details on what the application involves, see our step-by-step NZeTA application guide.
Checking Your NZeTA Validity Before You Travel
Before every trip to New Zealand, it is worth confirming that your NZeTA is still valid and that it matches your current travel passport. Check the approval email you received when the ETA was first issued — it will show the linked passport number and the expiry date of the ETA.
If there is any doubt, the safest course of action is to reapply. The fee is modest, the process is fast, and the peace of mind at check-in is well worth it. For a full list of what you need to travel to New Zealand, see our NZeTA requirements guide.
What Happens If You Travel Without a Valid NZeTA?
Airlines are responsible for checking that all passengers have the required travel authorisation before boarding. If your NZeTA is invalid or missing, you will likely be denied boarding at your departure airport. New Zealand border control will also refuse entry on arrival if you cannot provide proof of a valid ETA or visa. Do not leave this until the last minute.
