Do Qatar Citizens Need a New Zealand ETA (NZeTA)?

Qatari passport holders are permitted to stay in New Zealand for up to 90 days per visit. This is the standard NZeTA allowance for GCC nationals. The 90-day limit applies to each individual entry into New Zealand — not to the life of the NZeTA itself.

The NZeTA remains valid for 2 years from the date of issuance and permits multiple entries. A Qatari traveller who visits New Zealand in one season and returns later in the same two-year window does not need to reapply for an NZeTA — provided the original NZeTA is still valid at the time of the second visit.

With 90 days available per visit, there is ample time to explore New Zealand comprehensively — from the Bay of Islands in the far north to Queenstown and Milford Sound in the deep south. Many Qatari visitors choose to combine visits to New Zealand with nearby destinations in Australia or the Pacific Islands, returning to New Zealand on a second entry within the same NZeTA validity window.

The NZeTA application for Qatari citizens is entirely online. There are no forms to print or post, and no embassy appointment required. The steps are straightforward:

1. Complete the online application form — enter your Qatari passport details (passport number, date of birth, expiry date), personal information, and a brief description of your travel purpose. This typically takes 5–10 minutes.
2. Answer the health and character declaration — these are standard questions asked of all NZeTA applicants. Answer honestly. The vast majority of Qatari applicants pass without any issues.
3. Pay the NZeTA fee — by credit or debit card (Visa or Mastercard). The fee includes both the NZeTA processing charge and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL). Payment is non-refundable.
4. Await your approval email — most applications are decided within 24–72 hours. When approved, a confirmation email is sent to the address you provided. The NZeTA is then electronically linked to your passport.

Apply well in advance of travel — at least one week before your scheduled departure date from Qatar.

The NZeTA application requires only a few items, making it significantly simpler than applying for a traditional visa:

• Valid Qatari passport — your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from New Zealand. Only a Qatari citizen passport is eligible — residency documents are not accepted.
• Email address — a working email address is required to receive your NZeTA approval notification. Ensure you use an address you can access during your travels.
• Payment card — a credit or debit card (Visa or Mastercard) to pay the application fee. The fee is non-refundable.
• Health and character declaration — honest responses to questions about your health and any criminal background.

No biometric photographs, financial proof, accommodation bookings, or travel insurance documents are submitted as part of the NZeTA application. You may, however, be asked to present evidence of these at the New Zealand border on arrival.

Qatari citizens can fly from Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha — whether on Qatar Airways, another airline, or via a connecting hub — and their NZeTA is valid regardless of the flight routing taken.

Many travellers from Qatar route their New Zealand flights through Singapore (Changi Airport), Kuala Lumpur (KLIA), or Sydney (Kingsford Smith). The NZeTA is valid for entry at any of New Zealand's international airports — including Auckland (AKL), Christchurch (CHC), Wellington (WLG), and Queenstown (ZQN).

It is worth noting that if your routing involves a stopover of more than 24 hours in Australia, you may need a separate Australian ETA (or visa) for the Australian leg. However, this does not affect your NZeTA for New Zealand, which remains fully valid. Always check the entry requirements for any transit or stopover countries separately.
